“The trees they took away”

Santa Lucía, Estado de México, México. 
February 2024I have known Caty since I was a child, she has always been close to me. 
A year ago, she shared with me her concern about the problem of deforestation in her village, Santa Lucía. “They are taking away the trees,” she told me.

In February 2024, I began documenting her family’s life and their efforts to protect the forest. Santa Lucía has one of the highest rates of logging in the State of Mexico. Most of the young people in the community dedicate their lives to this practice. Over the years, the illegal logging industry has only grown, and today it is a serious problem.
